Why Blankets Matter This Far North

The 500 psi Rule

Fresh concrete that freezes before it reaches roughly 500 psi can permanently lose a large share of its final strength. In cold weather that first window can stretch to several days.

Cold Weather Is Official at 40°F

Cold-weather concreting practice kicks in any time temperatures fall to 40°F during the protection period. Around Backus, that can describe seven months of the year.

Trapped Heat Does the Work

Curing concrete generates its own heat. Insulated blankets trap it, holding the slab in the temperature range where it keeps gaining strength instead of freezing.

Rent or Buy?

One winter pour: rent the blankets with your ground heater and send everything back when the concrete is cured. Pouring all season: buy new blankets once and they will protect years of work. Many of our contractors do both, owning a base stack and renting extras when a big placement comes up. Blankets also pull double duty as frost protection over sub-grade, valve boxes, and fresh backfill.

Common Questions

How long does fresh concrete need protection in winter?

Until it reaches roughly 500 psi, which takes about 24 to 48 hours in moderate temperatures and can take three or more days near 40°F. Most cold-weather practice calls for keeping concrete at 50°F or warmer for at least the first several days. When in doubt, leave the blankets on longer.

What happens if concrete freezes before it cures?

The water in the mix expands as it freezes and breaks the young cement structure from the inside. Concrete frozen in its first hours can lose up to half of its potential strength, and no amount of later curing gets it back. That is why blankets, and on bigger jobs hydronic heat under blankets, are standard practice here.

How many blankets do I need?

Each 12 ft x 25 ft blanket covers 300 sq ft. Measure your pour, divide by 300, and add enough to overlap edges and seams, since edges are where heat escapes first. For a typical 24 ft x 30 ft garage slab, three blankets with overlap is a comfortable setup.

Do blankets replace a ground heater?

For milder cold and smaller pours, blankets alone often carry the job. In deep winter, blankets team up with a hydronic ground heater: the heater supplies heat through hoses and the blankets hold it in. We stock Wacker Neuson E-Series ground heaters for exactly that combination.
